What does it involve?

The event is designed to be simple and accessible to all Geography students around the world! The more that get involved the better! My aim is to get students involved with a fun and engaging online collaborative mapping event to help promote the value of GIS and Geography.

The event was launched on GIS Day on the 18th of November 2015. Thousands of students did it at this time. The resources are now freely available to do at any time with your students.

Watch the video on this page to see what the event will involve. To participate in the event students will simply need to:

  1. Open the web page link provided (on the home page)

  2. Place a pin near their home on the online map

  3. Look at the online maps provided with data about their home area such as land heights, population density, wealth, distance from hospitals etc.

  4. Enter data into the online form provided based on the data for their home area

Their responses will then create an overall risk score for their home area based on the potential impacts of a mega volcanic eruption. Students can then explore the data patterns from all the responses to study the variations between areas.

In addition on this site you will find a range of support and promotional materials, suggested schemes of work, lesson plans and resources which you can use. Some schools may hype up the event and get everyone involved. Others may just do it with a class where it overlaps with a topic like hazards.
